Han Solo is booted out of the Imperial Navy for rescuing a band of enslaved Wookiees, one of whom is named Chewbacca “Chewie,” a loyal companion who claims to owe Han a “life debt.” Han and Chewie find work as smugglers and soon they are employed by Jabba and Jiliac the Hutt. In this book, Han meets Lando Calrissian for the first time, he faces off with Boba Fett, and the book culminates in the dramatic Battle of Nar Shadaa!

The novel culminates in a space battle over the secret Imperial base code-named “Blackmoon” that houses a research facility called “Borleias.” All the while a traitor seems to be lurking in their midst…
X-Wing Series: X-Wing: Wedge’s Gamble (1996) by Michael Stackpole – 5/5
The New Republic invades the former Imperial capital of Coruscant where the warlord Ysanne “Iceheart” Isard has been ruling with an iron fist alongside Kirtan Loor, Corran Horn’s arch-nemesis. To destabilize Isard, the Rogues release many criminal Black Sun prisoners from Kessel, and during the fierce battle, Corran Horn is betrayed and captured. In the end, Iceheart abandons Coruscant but she reveals her true plan for destroying the New Republic: she has left behind the nasty “Krytos” virus.

X-Wing Series: X-Wing: The Krytos Trap (1996) by Michael Stackpole – 4/5
With the Krytos virus wreaking havoc across Coruscant, bacta prices are rising, and trust in the New Republic is collapsing. Ysanne Isard’s associate Kirtan Loor leads an underground terrorist cell called the Palpatine Counter-insurgency Front, the Rogues battle the forces of Warlord Zsinj, Tycho Celchu is put on trial for being a traitor, and Corran Horn mounts a daring rescue from the impenetrable Lunsankya prison wherein he discovers a secret about his true heritage.

X-Wing Series: X-Wing: The Bacta War (1997) by Michael Stackpole – 3/5
Ysanne “Iceheart” Isard retreats to the planet Thyferra, home of the bacta-producing insectoid race known as the Vratix, while the Rogues build their capacity for a planetary invasion and attempt to win over the hearts and minds of allies along the way. Corran Horn confronts the real spy in Rogue Squadron (who was outed in the previous book) and Michael Stackpole’s four-book comes to a dramatic conclusion as Rogue Squadron goes “rogue” from the New Republic and faces-off with Isard in a direct assault.

Admiral Ackbar has been arrested on suspicion of treason! Han, Luke, and Lando try to track down the truth, while Luke faces-off against a Dark Jedi, we learn of a secret Imperial cloning facility, Leia and Chewbacca build an alliance with the Noghri species on Honoghr, and Mara Jade joins up with smuggler Talon Karrde to uncover the mythical long-dormant “Dark Force” Katana fleet sitting out in space before Grand Admiral Thrawn can claim the fleet for himself.
Thrawn Trilogy: The Last Command (1993) by Timothy Zahn – 5/5
Now armed with the Katana Fleet, Grand Admiral Thrawn begins conquering key worlds and amassing an army of Imperial clones to take down the New Republic. All the while, a Dark Jedi named Joruus C’baoth goes mad and the New Republic learns there is a secret “Delta Source” traitor in its midst. Meanwhile, Mara Jade struggle to find a way to fulfill the Emperor’s “Last Command” to kill Luke Skywalker and a grand battle against Grand Admiral Thrawn ensues.

While building the new Jedi Academy on Yavin IV, Luke Skywalker encounters a mysterious dark force that seems to be emanating from a nearby temple. At the same time, Mon Mothma falls ill, and Leia and Admiral Ackbar lead an ill-fated diplomatic mission to the planet Vortex, all the while Admiral Daala launches a string of terrorist attacks against the New Republic before a confrontation ensues on Ackbar’s homeworld of Mon Cala.

Things are perilous for the New Republic as Luke Skywalker’s wayward pupil Kyp Duron comes under the dark influence of an ancient Sith Lord named Exar Kun, while Luke is attacked and very nearly killed. At the same time, the solar-system-destroying weapon known as the Sun Crusher goes missing, and Leia’s three children are threatened.
